Day Trips from Malaga Airport

Nerja, Ronda, Mijas and more from AGP

Last updated: July 2026

Landing at Malaga Airport (AGP) puts you within easy reach of some of Andalusia's most spectacular destinations. Whether you are basing yourself in Malaga city or heading straight to the coast, these day trips are all doable from the airport area. Distances below are from AGP; times assume you have a rental car unless noted otherwise.

Quick Comparison

1. Nerja and the Balcon de Europa

Distance from AGP: 65 km east · Drive time: 50–70 minutes · Bus: yes, from Malaga (about 1 hour 15 minutes)

Nerja is the classic Costa del Sol day trip. The town sits on a headland with the famous Balcon de Europa — a promenade perched above the sea with views along the coast. Below the cliffs you will find small coves and chiringuitos serving grilled sardines.

Do not miss:

Tip: parking in Nerja centre is limited in summer. Arrive before 10:00 or use the car park on the eastern edge of town.

2. Ronda

Distance from AGP: 100 km inland · Drive time: 1 hour 30 minutes · Bus: yes from Malaga (about 2 hours)

Ronda is one of Spain's most dramatic towns, split in two by the El Tajo gorge — a 100-metre-deep canyon spanned by the 18th-century Puente Nuevo bridge. The old town on one side and the newer Mercadillo district on the other make for a full day of exploring.

Do not miss:

Tip: the drive through the mountains on the A-357 is scenic but winding. Allow extra time if you are not comfortable on mountain roads. A car is strongly recommended over the bus for this trip.

3. Mijas Pueblo

Distance from AGP: 30 km west · Drive time: 30–40 minutes · Bus: train to Fuengirola, then bus to Mijas (about 1 hour total)

Mijas Pueblo is a postcard-perfect whitewashed village clinging to the hillside above the coast. Donkey taxis, craft shops and panoramic views over the Mediterranean make it popular with cruise passengers and day trippers — but it is genuinely charming if you visit on a weekday morning.

Do not miss:

Tip: combine with a stop in Fuengirola for lunch on the beach if you have time. See our Fuengirola transport guide.

4. Granada and the Alhambra

Distance from AGP: 130 km east · Drive time: 1 hour 30 minutes · Bus: ALSA from Malaga (about 2 hours)

Granada is the jewel of Andalusia — the Alhambra palace alone justifies the journey. But this is a long day trip, and Alhambra tickets sell out weeks ahead in summer.

Do not miss:

Tip: only attempt this as a day trip if you have Alhambra tickets confirmed. Without them, you will spend the day in queues. Consider an overnight stay instead.

5. Caminito del Rey

Distance from AGP: 60 km north · Drive time: 1 hour · Bus: limited — car recommended

The Caminito del Rey is a spectacular cliff-side walkway pinned to the walls of a gorge in El Chorro. It was once called the world's most dangerous path; today it is a safe, ticketed attraction with jaw-dropping views.

Practical info:

6. Antequera

Distance from AGP: 55 km north · Drive time: 45 minutes · Bus: yes from Malaga

Antequera is an overlooked inland gem — a quiet town with Roman ruins, three prehistoric dolmens (UNESCO World Heritage), and a dramatic hilltop fortress. Far fewer tourists than Ronda or Nerja, and a good choice if you want history without the crowds.

Do not miss: the dolmen sites (Menga, Viera, El Romeral), the Alcazaba fortress, and lunch in the old town around Plaza San Sebastián.

Choosing the Right Day Trip

Getting Organised

Most day trips work best with a rental car picked up at AGP. If you are staying in Malaga city without a car, base yourself near the bus station (Estación de Autobuses) or Maria Zambrano train station for day-trip departures.

Organised coach tours are available from Malaga and Torremolinos for Nerja, Ronda and Granada if you prefer not to drive. Book through your hotel or at tourist offices in the city centre.
