Malaga Airport Layover Guide

What to do during a stopover at AGP

Last updated: July 2026

A layover at Malaga Airport (AGP) does not have to mean hours of staring at a departure screen. The airport sits just 8 km from a beautiful Andalusian city, and the train into town takes only 18 minutes. Whether you have 3 hours or 8, this guide helps you make the most of your stopover.

How Much Time Do You Need?

Rule of thumb: be back at the airport at least 2 hours before your connecting flight (2.5 hours in summer). Factor in 20 minutes each way for the train and 30–45 minutes for security.

Can You Leave the Airport?

For most travellers, yes:

Luggage Storage

Do not drag suitcases around Malaga during your layover. Left-luggage facilities are available in Terminal 3:

Store your bags, take the train into town, and collect them on your return.

Layover Itinerary: 5–6 Hours in Malaga City

Can You Sleep at Malaga Airport?

Malaga Airport is not designed for overnight stays, but it is open 24 hours. Landside seating is available but uncomfortable. There is no dedicated sleep pod or transit hotel inside the terminal. If you have an overnight layover, consider one of the airport hotels nearby — most offer free shuttle service.

Making Your Connection

Visa and Entry Requirements

EU/EEA citizens and many nationalities (UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan) can enter Spain visa-free for up to 90 days. If you need a Schengen visa, ensure it is valid for your layover. Non-visa nationals connecting to a non-Schengen destination may still need to clear passport control to leave the airport.
